Since 1975, the Kootenay Co-op in Nelson, B.C., has proven that a grocery store can be more than a place to shop. As a community-owned cooperative, it puts people and the planet first—cutting waste, saving energy, and supporting over 120 regional suppliers. Organic is central to its mission, with a produce department that’s entirely certified organic.
Built for Efficiency
Sustainability shapes the Co-op’s 21,000 sq. ft. building. Heat from refrigeration warms the store and preheats water. LED lights make up 90% of all lighting, and motion sensors save power in quiet areas. Every detail helps energy go further. Covered bike parking and onsite EV chargers make low-impact travel easy. Many staff bike, bus, carpool, drive EVs, or walk to work.
Waste Not
Waste reduction happens every day. The bulk section offers pantry staples, herbs, coffee, soaps, and oils—without extra packaging. Members save 10% when they bring their own containers. Tens of thousands of purchases each year avoid single-use packaging. At the tills, paper bag use tells the same story. With $30 million in annual sales, more than 97% of shops leave in a reused box or bag. Behind the scenes, staff divert most food waste through donations, composting, and animal feed.
Beyond the Store
The Co-op’s values reach far beyond its walls. Daily food donations support local food banks and community groups. Each month, members fundraise for a new Organization of the Month. Twice a year, Community Grants help grassroots projects grow. Ongoing sponsorships keep local programs thriving—from climate education and food security to sports, arts, and festivals.
True Local Impact
The True Local program supports over 120 suppliers within 160 kilometres of Nelson—from farmers and ranchers to artisans and makers. Last year, over $4 million went directly to these producers. Each purchase keeps money close to home, cuts food miles, and strengthens the regional food system.
Always Room to Grow
Recognition as a BC Green Business – Green Level, Water-Friendly Certified marks both a milestone and a challenge. The Co-op continues to cut paper use, maintain equipment, and recover every scrap of waste. For the Kootenay Co-op, sustainability isn’t a checklist. It’s a daily commitment to waste less, use energy wisely, and support the local food community.
