How whale watching can be a force for good

A Passion for the Water with a Purpose

When Tyler and Stephen took over Campbell River Whale Watching in 2018, they weren’t just acquiring a business – they were embracing a legacy of sustainability. Having deep personal connections to the ocean, both saw an opportunity to create a company that wasn’t just about unforgettable experiences, but also about making a real difference for the environment.

They were inspired by the team’s passion for sharing nature’s wonders with visitors from all over the world. Watching guests experience wildlife in its natural habitat for the first time, and seeing their genuine connection to the environment, made them realize just how powerful this experience could be in shifting people’s perspectives on the natural world.

Turning Inspiration into Action

For Campbell River Whale Watching, conservation is at the heart of everything they do. Since 2018, they’ve protected over 58,800 square meters of old-growth forest along BC’s coast, helping with carbon sequestration and preserving vital habitats. The company also integrates sustainability into daily operations, from extensive composting to a conservation fee on every ticket, which supports local environmental efforts.

A Business That Gives Back

Supporting the local community is just as important as environmental protection. In 2023 alone, the company donated over $88,000 to local NGOs, supporting initiatives in education, conservation, and social causes. They also host Pride Cruises and Canada Day Fireworks Cruises, raising funds for organizations like North Island Pride and Campbell River Hospice, which enhance local health services and promote inclusivity. Partnerships with Indigenous groups, like the Laichwiltach Family Life Society, help strengthen cultural connections and support Indigenous education.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and Campbell River Whale Watching is constantly seeking new ways to make a difference. To reduce plastic waste, they’ve swapped out traditional garbage bags for repurposed sail bags made by local business Salt Legacy. They also run a marine debris collection challenge where staff compete to remove litter from the ocean, reinforcing a hands-on approach to conservation. At their marina, they advocated for gender neutral bathrooms, which as a result got established as such last year.

By blending adventure with environmental and community stewardship, Campbell River Whale Watching is showing that tourism can be a powerful force for good. Learn more about their initiatives and tours at campbellriverwhalewatching.com.
